Edith Achilles (1925-2020) and their daughter Barbara Achilles (1946-2010) They were businesswomen in Hamburg's mechanical engineering industry. For decades, they shared their profession, the management of their companies, and their passion for collecting. Each had her own area of interest, but they always supported each other. Barbara Achilles's specialty was books, particularly German press publications, of which she amassed a significant library [see catalogue Christian Hesse (ed.), Wege zum idealen Buch, Hamburg 2012]. Edith Achilles, on the other hand, was primarily interested in Art Nouveau for over 30 years, but after the turn of the millennium, she increasingly shifted her focus to contemporary glass (see catalogue Uwe Claassen: Glas … Kunst aus Sand und Feuer. Die Sammlung der Barbara Achilles-Stiftung, Hamburg 2016) and contemporary ceramics.
